World Down Syndrome Day
Did you know there is a World Down syndrome day?
World Down syndrome day has been observed on March 21 since 2006.
This past March, in 2012, World Down syndrome day was officially recognized and celebrated by the United Nations.
The date 3/21 signifies the 3 copies of chromosome 21 which is present in individuals with Down syndrome.
This day is specifically set aside to celebrate individuals and citizens of our great big world, who are living with Down syndrome.
To quote www.worlddownsyndromeday.org, “Through this we were able to create a single global voice for advocating for the rights, inclusion and well being of people with Down syndrome.”
To think that I was unaware of this day and now 6 years later, I have celebrated it, with my son in the hospital, just a few days before he was released from the NICU.
And next year, I will be able to celebrate it with him and our new Down syndrome friends and family.
