Royal was born with a heart defect that we learned about prenatally called Atrioventricular Canal (AV Canal or AVC).Congenital Heart Disease (CHD) is present in half of children born with Down syndrome, and 45 percent of these cases have AV canal. There is still research going on for the cause and treatments.
Royal had two open heart surgeries when he was 3 months young. The first was to fix the AV Canal and the second was to repair stress punctures from the AV Canal repair. Lucky for Royal, chicks dig scars. I thank God everyday for every second with Royal and every ounce of energy He gives me to keep up with Royal.
With Congenital Heart Diseases you can help.
“How can I help?” you are most likely asking yourself. Well let me tell you.
You can donate blood and other blood products. I highly recommend to find a local hospital or Children’s Hospital to donate to. We loved donating at the Children’s Hospital Los Angeles (CHLA.org) for Royal’s surgery and are going to make another trip up there to donate again.
The American Red Cross is always accepting blood and you can find a location near you at www.redcrossblood.org/make-donation. Donate blood as soon as you can, or as CHLA puts it, “donate the gift of life.”
