31 for 21: Day 10

Down syndrome and Age

Up until we found out about Royal’s diagnosis, I thought, only older woman, had babies with Down syndrome.

I never thought my baby would have Down syndrome, I was 31 years old when Royal was conceived and given my age, my chances of having a baby with Down syndrome was 1 in 800. You can imagine my disbelief and shock when, at 13 weeks pregnant, Logan and I were told that our baby had a 1 in 5 chance of having Down syndrome.

The fact is a woman has a higher chance of having a baby born with Down syndrome, the older she gets, however 80% of babies with Down syndrome are born to mothers under the age of 35.

This is due to woman under the age of 35 having more babies, than woman over 35.

Down syndrome just happens, it happens to young women and older women, regardless of race or economic status which in my eyes makes Down syndrome diverse and beautiful.
